A carbon credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent that has been avoided, reduced, or removed from the atmosphere. Once verified against a recognised methodology, that reduction can be certified, registered, and sold — turning environmental performance into a tradeable financial asset. For enterprises across South Asia, this creates a new revenue stream from projects that were previously judged purely on operational or compliance grounds.

Compliance Markets vs. Voluntary Markets

Compliance markets exist where regulation obliges emitters to hold credits or allowances — the EU Emissions Trading System is the best-known example. Voluntary markets, by contrast, serve corporates and institutions choosing to offset emissions as part of a net-zero or ESG commitment. Most Bangladeshi and South Asian projects — afforestation, cookstove distribution, renewable energy, and methane capture — currently monetise through the voluntary market, where standards such as Verra's VCS and the Gold Standard dominate.

The Three Pillars of Credibility

Buyers scrutinise three things before purchasing credits: additionality (would the reduction have happened anyway, without the project?), permanence (will the reduction or removal last?), and MRV — measurement, reporting and verification, the audit trail that proves the claimed impact actually occurred. Projects that get these fundamentals right, and document them rigorously from day one, consistently command stronger pricing and buyer confidence than those that treat verification as an afterthought.
